Catch-up and life's slow-down

Nothing about my week slowed down after the last entry. Last Thursday I fully expected to be coming home soon after the daytime job. But I ran and ran and ran and made it home about 10:30. The big accomplishment of the night was that I asked for an extended leave of abscence from the restaurant. Well, I actually asked to quit and wasn't allowed to. That's fine. I wouldn't mind helping them if they are in a bind and I might need them one of these days too. It is a big relief this week to know I don't have to rush off to work there.

I went to the barber shop called "Sexy Scissors" last week. It was a funny. We had a remote going there and my friend Eric had to be the one to do the remote (thank God it wasn't me!). I went by to watch him squirm. The commercials for the place make it sound like a brothel where you can get your hair cut. It sounds like it is opulent with lots of sexy women and satisfied men. In truth, it was more of a typical $7 haircut place with magazine soft-porn pin-ups on the walls. The women were attractive, but a little old, and not what men typically are hankering for, I would guess. I got my hair cut since I was there and it was an okay haircut.

Friday my co-workers at the doctor's office had a going-away happy hour for our Ph.D. student that is moving to Minnesota. Even Mark joined us and it was fun to show him off and let him get to know my co-workers.

Friday night was Lyle Lovett at the Backyard. I've had a lot of people be jeolous that I was getting to go, but if I had it to do over again I would spend my money to go see him at the Majestic in San Antonio and skip this venue. I like the atmosphere at the Backyard, but for a serious musician and performer like Lyle Lovett, he needs a venue where he can be heard. There were people standing in the aisle next to us carrying on conversations and laughing and completely ignoring the music. SO IRRITATING!!

But, Lyle Lovett was wonderful and the Large Band was fabulous. It was great to see him again.

Saturday morning the phone rang at 10 a.m. and I saw that it was the radio station. I panicked, thinking that I should be on the air and I was late, but it turns out it wasn't my fault but there was a schedule problem and they needed me there. My car was still at the doctor's office so Mark had to take me there and I had to dash to the station. He ran and brought me some coffee and a muffin, but it is hard to feel good about your show when your harried and grungy. Thank goodness we'd gone home after the show and hadn't stayed out drinking. We did stay up until 3 a.m. but I still had a pretty good night of sleep.

Of course, rushing to work meant I still wasn't getting my house cleaned for my parents' visit.

I didn't know how long I would be on the air and I was prepared to be on all day and then have to go straight to a club for a remote that night. But the boss got in touch with a guy and he came in at 4 p.m. I was able to finish my other work and get home and clean up before going to Midnight Rodeo.

The group Pinmonkey was at the club and I did a remote. They still didn't blow me away. We don't play their music and I don't know if we will. It is getting a lot of notice for being more bluegrass and different, but it still if very Nashville. The remote was fun and the people-watching was good.

Sunday I worked at the station and then had a quick visit with the other Austin journal writers. Wish it could have been longer but my folks were on the way.

My folks spent two nights with us. Sunday we all napped and then they and I went to eat at the Kerbey Lane Cafe. The service was lousy but I felt sympathy for the waiter because he was oversat and frantic. We went on to see Mark at Antone's. It was a good show but I am always uneasy with my parents at a club. They aren't really drinkers, although Daddy had a beer with me, and I worry about their opinions of the club, the drunks, the strippers, etc.

Monday, yesterday, I took the day off work! Hallelujah! What a wonderful thing! We went to Blanco and Luckenbach. We saw the damage from the flooding and were amazed at the depth of the water in Luckenbach. It's down now, but it had been up deeper than waist-deep in the store and bar. The store remains closed and the merchandise has moved to the dance hall.

We drove over to the LBJ ranch and were run off by a park ranger when we were in an area that is only open to tour buses during the day. The Pedernales had been up above the road to the ranch and fences were down and part of the roadway over the river had washed away. The river was still full and fast.

We bought peaches, tomatoes, zucchini, squash, and pickles at a roadside fruit market. We came home and I actually cooked a dinner. Considering I hadn't been at the store in ages, it was amazing that I had something to put with the fresh fruits and vegetables. We had baked chicken, steamed squash and zucchini, fresh tomatoes, pickles, and peach cobbler with ice cream. Yum. It was great to have a real meal.

Mark went to play a gig with the Blue Monday band at Antone's for their anniversary week kickoff. Mom and Dad and I just watched some lame TV and went to bed.

Today, the rain has made me sleepy and made me feel like it is fall. Mom and Dad left, I went to work, and tonight I'm home just taking it easy and catching up. It is wonderful. Tonight I feel like I might have a handle on my life again.

Hooray.
